Perkins
State Funding Levels Released for FY 2011 ACTE Legislative Update
The Department of Education just released final
allocations for each federal program and state. Perkins was cut
significantly in the FY 2011 appropriations bill. Funding for Tech
Prep was eliminated and a 3 percent cut was applied to the Basic
State Grant. In addition, an additional 0.2 percent across-the-board
cut was applied to all domestic federal programs. ACTE compares Basic
State Grant, Tech Prep, National Programs for FY 2010 and FY 2011 and
has prepared
a chart showing the amount of funding that has been allocated for

ESEA Reauthorization Bill Introduced in House of Representatives
Summary from
On May 13, Republican House education leaders introduced
the first bill to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education
Act (ESEA), i.e. No Child Left Behind. It is anticipated the
House will take a piece meal approach to ESEA reauthorization and
introduce several bills that will work to revise the current
law. Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA), chairman of the Subcommittee on
Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education, introduced the
Setting New Priorities in Education Spending Act (H.R. 1891), which
would eliminate 43 federal education programs. Many of the programs
were not funded in the FY11 spending bill or were eliminated or
consolidated in President Obama's FY12 budget request. Read the

The choice of undergraduate major in college is strongly
tied to a student's future earnings, with the highest-paying majors
providing salaries of about 300 percent more than the lowest-paying,
according to a study released May 24. Based on first-of-its-kind
Census data, the report by Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.,

High Program Sends Girl on a Collision Course with her Dreams Janet Heim,

Katelyn Troxler enrolled in the collision repair program
at Washington County Technical High School to set herself on the road
to the career she has mapped out. Troxler, 17, a senior from
Knoxville, wants to be a field agent with the FBI. To achieve that,
she plans to put herself through college with the earnings she'll

Secretary Vilsack Says Agency Will Adopt Recommendations on Diversity Krissah

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said Tuesday that his
agency would quickly adopt most of the recommendations contained in a
two year study that looked at USDA's history of discrimination and
its ongoing civil rights failings.

development programs more accessible to women to appointing a
"chief diversity officer" in each of the agency's state
