Adult-Education Leaders Visit Capitol Hill to Push for More Federal Dollars Jennifer Gonzalez, Chronicle of Higher Education

During a recent joint meeting of the National Association of State Directors of Career Technical Education Consortium and the federal Office of Vocational and Adult Education, Education Secretary Arne Duncan told the large crowd to expect more cuts in Perkins funds for the 2012 fiscal year. He said that career- and technical-education advocates must make a compelling case for continued federal financial support by showing improved student outcomes. Read More

 

Department of Labor Announces H-1B Technical Skills Training Grants

Labor Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis today announced the availability of approximately $240 million through the H-1B technical skills training grant competition. The U.S. Department of Labor expects to fund 75-100 grants through a single solicitation. Individual grants will range from $1 million to $5 million and will be distributed through two rounds of funding. The projects to be funded will help workers update current skills or acquire new ones so they can enter career pathways leading to higher-paying jobs. Learn More

 

USAID Establishes Office of Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment

The U.S. Agency for International Development  established a new Office of Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment. Led by Senior Coordinator Carla Koppell, the office will work to support entrepreneurship among women, increase female ownership of land and housing worldwide, and lessen gender gaps in access to technology and infrastructure. U.S. Companies Fail to Increase Women Directors, Study Finds Cecile Vannucci, Bloomberg News

Women and minorities remain underrepresented in U.S. corporate boardrooms, crimping companies' potential to lead in the global economy, a report by the Alliance for Board Diversity showed. White men held 73 percent of board seats at Fortune 100 companies last year, up from 71 percent in 2004, according to the alliance, which advocates the inclusion of women and minorities on corporate boards. White women accounted for 15 percent in 2010, compared with 14 percent in 2004, while minorities made up 13 percent, down from 15 percent. Read More

 

Michigan Community Colleges Learning to Better Train Low-Skilled Workers Summary from CTE Policy Watch Blog

A new policy brief, sponsored by Jobs for the Future, looks at Michigan's No Worker Left Behind (NWLB) initiative, a community college led program designed to retrain tens of thousands of adults to qualify for jobs in emerging and expanding sectors of the economy. The program offers jobless, dislocated, and low-income residents up to $5,000 in tuition, fees, and books each year, along with related supports such as child care subsidies and transportation assistance, for enrolling in up to two years of postsecondary education. This report argues that the national cannot meet the President's goal of leading the world in postsecondary attainment without improving educational outcomes for Latino students.
