Obama
Makes Education a State of Union Centerpiece Alyson Klein and
Michele McNeil, Education Week
President Barack Obama used his State of the Union
address Tuesday night to put education front-and-center on the
national agenda, and on the agenda of the newly divided Congress. And
he tied his education proposals, including the long-stalled
reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act,
directly to the nation's economic future. "This is our

Job-Training and Education Grants Program Launched Summary from AAUW
The Department of Labor, in conjunction with the
Department of Education, released guidelines for a grant program to
provide $2 billion over a four-year period to community colleges and
institutions offering degrees of two years or less. The program,
funded by the Student Aid Fiscal Responsibility Act, marks a large
increase in funding for two-year institutions, although it is far
less than $12 billion the failed American Graduation Initiative would
have invested.

had more than 65 members. The caucus has been crucial to CTE's
visibility on the Hill and will continue its important work this year
with Congress focusing heavily on job creation and training. Learn
