Description
Overview: The online module will equip you with tools and strategies to improve student access to and awareness of STEM Careers, and will help you to improve how you communicate and reach out to students about promising careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). This is particularly important considering erroneous perceptions and stereotypes that students may have adopted over the course of their educational careers.
Certificate: Upon completion of the module, you will be able to print a certificate of completion to provide to your institution’s human resources office for evidence of continuing education.
Audience: Educators, Counselors, Advisors, Administrators (NOTE: the theories, principles and strategies are useful for K-12 and post secondary, however many of the examples focus on a secondary setting.)
Length: ~1-2 hours
Objectives:
At the end of this module, you should be able to:
- Share the demand, opportunity, and multiple pathways available to your students in STEM careers.
- Describe STEM careers to your students using the following messages: a) STEM professionals make a world of difference and help shape our future; b) STEM careers are essential to our health, happiness, and safety; and c) STEM professionals are creative and collaborative problem-solvers.
- Relate STEM careers to the basic work values (intrinsic, extrinsic, social, prestige); thus increasing interest and awareness for your students.
This course also serves as an introduction to NAPE’s accompanying professional development that can be customized to any educational group, K-20.
